The Beauty That Surrounds Us

The presence of what is beautiful is the most profound of all experiences because of its mystifying ability to transform how we see the world—it becomes brighter, warmer, and more joyful—happier. The beautified world has a natural necessity to it: everything is in its proper place, everything feels just right, everything tickles my fancy—this smile and gesture, that tuft of hair flowing in the breeze, those bodies lost in passionate embrace—all are present to delight and please me. Even my own thoughts become messengers of what is beautiful, as every idea, belief, and judgment is good, truthful, and indispensable. But beauty has more than one face and effect: it also has the power to draw me out of myself, to unmask my feigned emotions, to force me to see through my miserable thoughts and misconceived actions, and to bring to mind a vision of what I could be. In this way, the presence of what is beautiful is not only an incomparable source of pleasure, but it's also useful—a veritable spur to my own self-beautification, even as it employs the radiant glow of illusion to light the way.
