Children + Music: Don't Touch My Hot Cross Buns!
Do not underestimate the power of music education in shaping a young student’s perspective on the world. Music education teaches children what it means to be excellent. When learning an instrument or learning to sing, one is always striving to reach higher levels of excellence. Whether moving up a scale or increasing range and speed, students who study music are more likely to apply this same work ethic to other academic subjects.
Young kids should be educated in musical history, as well. They must understand the musical trailblazers—and appreciate what they have accomplished—before they can be expected to surpass those who have come before. As Isaac Newton stated: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Furthermore, nurturing children through music education benefits society by fostering the artistic dimension of life; children become balanced, happy, and cultured human beings. The effect is two-fold: A student learns to appreciate art (the aesthetic), as well as math (the logic). By combining emotion and mathematics in one form, music education is truly a cherished discipline that we must not take for granted.
