Voice And Identity

Human voice lives at the threshold between what is most familiar, distinct, and certain and what is remote, ambiguous, and mysterious.  Your voice speaks your identity and announces to the world that it is you who are present and not someone else. In the mere sound of your name, a personal identity emerges that sets you apart from all other human beings.  And yet even as your name is sounded and your identity is fixed, an uncanny shift occurs: if I try to fix my mind on what is unique about you and then try to express it in words, your identity fades into the fuzzy world of the vague and inexplicable.  The best I can come up with are general categories that could apply to countless others (Exerpt from my book Thinking As Sport and Dance p. 20).
