Sinatra And Singing From The Heart

Singing from the heart is the most sublime expression of the singer’s artistic spirit, because it’s in these moments that the artist is giving his best to fulfill his duty as an intimate communicator. Part-and-parcel of this spirit are personal qualities—both masculine and feminine—that make up human emotional life. If art is about the experience of being human, then it must necessarily include both aspects. On this score, Sinatra’s art is not exclusively masculine. In fact, Sinatra’s talent in harmonizing masculine and feminine emotions to create specific moods is what is most distinctive about his sound. This is why his singing has always appealed to both sexes. This is true not only in his tender ballads, but also in his swing songs. When he sings, people pay close attention because they know that he will disclose a feeling that they will recognize as their own. They know, in short, that the heart that he sings from is their heart as well.
