Greatness In Singing

When does a singer arrive at greatness? What is it that an exceptional singer is able to accomplish in his performances that sets him apart from other, perhaps other equally gifted, vocalists? Total commitment to the task at hand: the courage to throw himself - body and soul - into the chaotic, topsy turvy, sensationalized world of the music, where the rules of public acceptability and decency are tossed aside for the sake of unfettered truth and pure, emotional unveiling.

The Natural Singer As Teacher 

I want to confront directly one of most puzzling issues in voice instruction and I want to do so by posing a simple question: Why are most voice teachers unable to teach their students the best way to improve their singing voices?

I wrestled with this question for years and I believe that I have formulated a good theory: Despite the voice training that they may have undergone, most voice teachers begin as natural singers and never had to learn to sing.

Your Voice Muscles In Action 

Whenever we produce a vowel sound, our voice muscles are immediately flexed into action. The particular vowel that is produced; the pitch on which it is produced; the volume at which it is produced; the speed at which the vowel may move through our range; the areas in our range (i.e., low, medium, high) where the vowel travels; and the intensity level of the emotion that is expressed—all determine how, and to what extent, the voice muscles are flexed. In my work, I have found five particular vowel sounds that flex the vocal muscles to an exceptional degree. I call these sounds “voice building vowels”; they are:
